Stan McQuay: Bodybuilder and Businessman

Stan-McQuay

by Matt Weik

Born in Yokosuka, Japan in 1973 to a Japanese mother and Irish father,[1] Stan McQuay moved to the United States with his family at an early age, living first in Illinois before settling in Van Nuys, California. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Stan spent most of his free time surfing and skateboarding. Stan became steadily employed and enrolled in community college. At a maximum height of 5’ 7” and weighing 135 lbs, Stan began weight-training in order to gain the muscle-mass necessary for college football. [source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_McQuay]

MATT: Thank you so much, Stan, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this interview. Can you tell us a little bit about what you’ve been up to lately and what you’re working on?

STAN: Currently I am preparing to step back onstage for my 4th Olympia appearance. I have 3 kids to add to the mix along with several business ventures I am involved in.

MATT: You are the proud owner of Physique Inc. Can you tell us a little bit about your business?

STAN: Currently I own a personal training company called Physique Inc. We service professional athletes, pro and amateur bodybuilders both men and women and anybody that wants to be in the best shape of their life. I also am opening my new hardcore gym here in Northridge, CA called LEGENDS GYM. This unique hardcore gym will be a new age throwback to the 80’s – 90’s gyms. I am launching my app end of year as well as a few of my sports nutrition supplements. Stay tuned!

MATT: As a fan of your physique over the course of your career, you haven’t been a stranger to the weights and putting in the work. If you had to pick one moment in your career that meant the most to you, what would it be and why?

STAN: The moment that meant the most to me in my career was winning my very first IFBB Pro show. I didn’t even know if I had what it takes to compete at the IFBB pro level and I end up winning my pro debut.

MATT: What made you want to change from the 202/212 division of bodybuilding that you had been competing in for years to make the jump to Classic Physique?

STAN: At this point in my career, health is my major concern. Getting huge was taking a toll on my body, both mentally and physically. I also was getting burned out. The inception of the new division has brought a new vibe to my life and has made training fun again.
This Classic Physique is the perfect fit for my weapons… aesthetics, symmetry and conditioning!

MATT: What would you say are the similarities and difference between Bodybuilding and Classic Physique?

STAN: Both divisions overall are almost the exact same thing. Athletes in both divisions eat the exact same food, train with the exact same philosophies and movements and take the same supplements. The only difference being is the posing and that as a Classic Physique competitor, we are now limited as to how much we can weigh in ratio to our height… basically not allowing guys to get too out of hand with their size. Aiming more for symmetry and aesthetics as well as bringing back the art of posing and presentation.

MATT: Has Classic Physique changed the way you train and diet?

STAN: Classic Physique hasn’t changed these things… my age and my advanced understanding of how the body responds to foods and training to have longevity in this sport. I have been competing at the highest level for 20 years strong now!

MATT: If you could give the people reading this interview one piece of advice (it can be anything), what would it be?

STAN: Never give up on your dreams… always push as hard as you can and never quit. If it’s important to you, then do everything in your power to learn and to advance so that your goals are met!

MATT: Where can people follow you and your career?
